Emergency Info

Loose Bracket, Wire, or Band

Don't be alarmed if something comes loose.  This happens occasionally.  If a bracket, wire, or band comes loose, it is not an emergency.  All we ask is that you call us and let us know, so that we can add a bit of time to your next scheduled appointment.  Depending on the circumstances, we may want to repair the broken item before your next scheduled appointment.  In this event, we will advise you of this and schedule a separate appointment.  Please call our office so that we can evaluate your situation and decide what is best for you.

Poking/Irritating Wire

If a wire protrudes and is irritating, use a blunt instrument (like the eraser end of a pencil) and gently push the irritating wire out of the way. Alternatively, wax may be placed over any sharp or poking wires.  If it cannot be bent away or covered, simply cut it with a nail clipper!  It is always ok to cut something that is protruding or poking.  Don't worry--we'll can easily replace whatever you removed at her next visit.

Discomfort

When you get your braces on, you may feel some general soreness in your mouth. It is normal for your teeth to be tender to biting pressures for three to five days.  It is also normal for your cheeks or tongue to be irritated at the beginning.  To feel better, you may rinse your mouth with a warm salt water mouthrinse. Dissolve one teaspoonful of salt in 8 ounces of warm water, and rinse your mouth vigorously. If the tenderness is more uncomfortable, take aspirin, Tylenol (acetaminophen), or Advil (ibuprofen), or whatever you normally take for headache or similar pain.

Trauma

In case of any accident involving the face, check your mouth and the appliances immediately. If teeth are loosened or the appliances damaged, contact us or your dentist immediately.
