Meet the Orthodontists at Outstanding Orthodontics

Dr. Mark Berkman
Dr. Mark Berkman grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and was a valedictorian of his graduating class at Bexley High School. He completed his undergraduate education through The Ohio State University Honors Program, and earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree summa cum laude from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. While in dental school, Dr. Berkman was named a Research Scholar by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and spent a year engaged in research at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Berkman subsequently attended the University of Michigan, where he received his Master of Science (MS) degree and specialty training in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.
Dr. Berkman is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Dentistry at the University of Michigan and has taught as a part-time faculty member in the Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry at Michigan for nearly 20 years. There, his primary teaching responsibilities include lectures on embryology & craniofacial growth at the predoctoral and graduate levels as well as instruction in the Orthodontic Clinic. During breaks from teaching, Dr. Berkman tries very hard to keep his colleagues in the department from finding out he ever attended Ohio State.
Dr. Berkman is currently licensed as a specialist in orthodontics in the state of Michigan, and is board certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. He is past-President of the Michigan Association of Orthodontists, a Director of the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation, and is a nationally-recognized educator on a variety of current topics in Orthodontics. He has been a featured speaker at many annual meetings of the American Association of Orthodontists, and also speaks regularly to smaller groups of doctors, hygienists, and assistants about new advances in evidence-based orthodontic treatment.
Aside from orthodontics, Dr. Berkman is a PADI-certified SCUBA Instructor and Rescue Diver, as well as an instrument-rated pilot who enjoys flying airplanes. He and his wife Lindsey, a periodontist, have three children.

Dr. Lainie Shapiro
Hi! I am Dr. Lainie Shapiro, and I am very honored to be your Orthodontist! I have been practicing Orthodontics for almost 25 years and I truly love what I do—helping kids, teens, and adults feel confident about their smiles.
I’m originally from the East Coast—born in Washington, DC—and lived in a few places growing up, including Gaithersburg, Maryland and Williamsville, New York, before my family settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan when I was in middle school. I went to City High School in Grand Rapids and graduated near the top of my class. It was actually during high school—after having braces myself and working in a couple of dental offices—that I realized I wanted to become an Orthodontist.
I went to the University of Michigan for college, Dental School, and my Orthodontic residency (yes, I was there for a while…11 years to be exact!). I studied Bio-Psychology as an undergrad, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree with distinction, earning Class Honors all four years. In Dental School, I was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Dental Society and received the Eleanor Bushee Senior Student Dental Award. I went on to earn both my Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) and a Master of Science (MS) in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. Dr. Berkman and I were classmates and co-residents during our Orthodontic residency at Michigan…and we’ve been practicing together ever since!
I am Board-certified through the American Board of Orthodontics and am honored to have earned Diplomate status. I am also a licensed Orthodontic Specialist here in Michigan. I served as a Director of the Michigan Association of Orthodontists and for many years, I taught part-time at the University of Michigan in the Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry, working with both Orthodontic and Pediatric Dental residents. Teaching has always been something I’ve enjoyed—it’s fun to share what I’ve learned with the next generation of dental professionals.
I met my husband, Michael (who is an Endodontist (aka Root Canal specialist) in West Bloomfield and Livonia) during Dental School. Although we are from different countries (he’s Canadian) and we attended different dental schools, we somehow made it work and we got married in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 2000. We now call Farmington Hills, Michigan home and we have two amazing kids and an overly friendly cocker spaniel. Our son attends the University of Michigan (Go Blue!) and our daughter attends Michigan State University (Go Green!), so we are now a house divided…but we prefer to think of it as the best of both worlds!
I can’t wait to meet you and your family!
